Fifteen years ago I sat in a computer science class at UC-Berkeley. When I heard the word recursion my head nearly exploded. I spent hours in a computer science lab trying to make a blackjack game that I didn't give a damn about and really could do nothing practical with. Instead of failing the class, and getting a D on my already less than stellar transcript, I decided I was "not a math person" and "not a computer science person"
Then Sarah Kathleen Peck introduced me to Mattan Griffel, who I interviewed on The Unmistakable Creative Podcast, my show about creatives doing remarkable work in the world. My conversation with Mattan Griffel expanded my view of what might be possible.
Maybe I actually could learn to code and build something. Maybe I could build an app, or service. So I took the plunge and decided to enroll in One Month Rails. While One Month might be a startup that teaches you skills, I think there's something even deeper going on. It expands your view of what's possible. It shows you what you can learn, and that you can learn it quickly.
“I don't think there are any classes out there at this price point where you can actually get started and build something.”
